Some do, but some are "semi-open". :-D Cheers, Kay I don't suppose you have a reference pic for those sorts of boots? I've never seen or heard of them. ;D I've always used splint boots on my real horses for everyday use and open fronts for jumping, I didn't know there was a 'semi open' type. It's hard to tell from my tiny iPod screen with your photos, but they look like the same type of open front boot I use, like these? Just curious. When I say "semi-open", I mean that they don't have to have the material totally encasing the leg, as was the case in the example photo I linked to. They look like your open front boots - with straps crossing to secure them, and you can still see some skin - but have the padding just on the inside of the leg, with the openings to the outside. The goal is to protect the horse from interference - depending on your horse and the event, you may want splints (think more of leg to leg interference in events that require quick movements), bell or ankle boots (overstriding), jumping boots like April's photo (support on landing and general protection), or perhaps just track or polo wraps (I'm sure there are other terms). Cheers, Kay

I've never seen splint boots that don't close over. I would have thought that they wouldn't offer much support that way, and wouldn't they be a little uncomfortable on the tendons on the outside of the leg? Maybe they're an American thing and I've just never seen them here. I don't suppose you have a different ref pic for me to see? I should have my PC back tonight, fingers crossed!

LOL - this has taken on a life of its own! Yes, here's another ref pic: As I mentioned, the first pic showed the ones that are fully enclosed - they are usually made of neoprene, with velcro straps, although you can also get the ones I called "semi-open" since you can still see some skin. 95% of the ones I see these days in stores are neoprene or some other type of synthetic, but since I bought my equipment before the synthetics were popular, mine were leather with straps like the ones shown in the second pic. It could just be a "custom and use" thing - we did more western games, barrels, poles, etc., not much jumping, so we were looking for something to protect the little splint bones on the inside of the legs. Having our horses making sharp turns around obstacles increased the chances that they could knock a hoof into the opposite leg's cannon and pop a splint. Besides, my mare was a huge clutz! ;D I worked for a hunter/jumper trainer for a summer, and we used the open-front boots for the competitive jumpers to give support and protection to the tendons and sides of the legs - open in front so that they don't get lazy and let the fronts of their legs brush the rails. That said, we also used splint boots on some, depending on the horse, the activity/stress and the degree of protection needed. Here's a nice little run-down on various boots: SPLINT BOOTS are designed to protect the splint bone, a small bone on the inside of the cannon bone. These boots offer little or no tendon protection and support. If your horse strikes himself at the trot or canter, or is involved in an activity which increases the likelihood of that occurrence, splint boots are a good idea. GALLOPING BOOTS protect the entire lower leg, with an emphasis on the tendon. Event boots and closed front tendon boots fall into the same category, and SPORT BOOTS are simply galloping boots with increased energy absorption abilities and increased tendon support. The drawback with any of these boots is that a jumper can hit a fence without feeling it, and a lazy horse will learn to take advantage of that situation. The OPEN FRONT JUMP BOOT is the solution to that problem. It protects the sensitive (and slow healing) tendon, yet allows the horse to feel it if he hits a rail. An absolute must if your jumper wears studs. ANKLE BOOTS are most often seen in company of the open front boot. They protect the fetlock joint from injury when jumping, and more importantly, from hind leg brushing on event and show jumping horses which commonly wear studs on their shoes for traction. One should never use horseshoe studs without adequate leg protection. BELL BOOTS protect the coronet band, which, if cut deeply, can take as long as a year to heal. The most common cause of injury to this area is a horse that forges, or catches the back of a forefoot with a hind toe at the trot, but the result is the same regardless of which foot is responsible. A horse can also injure the coronet by hitting a jump or even a ground pole. SKID BOOTS are an absolute necessity for the reining horse. Teaching and perfecting the sliding stop takes many hours in the saddle, but all that work can be undone in seconds if a horse is asked to slide without protection and burns the back of his fetlock joint. RUNDOWN BOOTS are sometimes confused with skid boots, since they protect the same area, although for a different reason. Some horses, notably thoroughbred racehorses, overflex the fetlock joint severely at high speeds, actually striking the ground with the back of the fetlock joint. There are at least three different uses for KNEE BOOTS, and they require different variations. A fairly tough boot is required to protect the event horse when training on the road. The reining horse trainer, however, may use a very thin knee boot. The theory is that when a horse is spinning, it hesitates slightly when the hair on the back of one knee brushes against the front of the opposite knee. The thin boot would, in theory, eliminate that sensitivity. Before implementing this piece of equipment, the trainer should make sure that the horse is coordinated enough that it is not relying on that sixth sense to avoid an accident. Finally, a knee boot may also be used for shipping or in the treatment of an injury. HOCK BOOTS are not used for riding, but for protection in shipping, or to cover an existing injury. Occasionally, a hock boot might be worn by a show horse to prevent manure stains from appearing immediately before a halter class. Obviously, they cover the hock. SHIPPING BOOTS are exactly as the name implies, they are worn in the horse trailer. They protect the cannon bone area, the coronet band, and they may or may not also cover the knees and hocks. Cheers, Kay

I have just one comment, if you are showing a model that is of male gender as a female you must photograph it so that the male parts don't show, either using shadows or an angle that puts a leg to hide things.

Hey Kay, Sorry to go horribly off-topic: but isn't it a good idea to put your post on boots as a topic somewhere in the tack forums or something? As reference material? It's very informative and clear. Maybe it'll be helpful to other showers!

Hey Kay, Sorry to go horribly off-topic: but isn't it a good idea to put your post on boots as a topic somewhere in the tack forums or something? As reference material? It's very informative and clear. Maybe it'll be helpful to other showers! No problem. I couldn't figure out how to extract it entirely, so I've copied that post and made a new thread in the Miscellaneous Tack topic. :-) Cheers, Kay
